Stryd Wearable Power Meter For Runners

A new wearable power meter has been created specifically for runners to provide them with data and feedback on the power of their running rather than their heart rate and calories burned.

The new power meter sensor enables runners to be able to more accurately adjust their training schedule to meet their exact requirements and provides them with a more accurate assessment of how they are improving and their running style.

The team over at Stryd explain a little more about the process of creating this new wearable fitness training aid :“Three years ago, Stryd started as an idea to improve the metrics athletes use to train and compete. We quicklyfound that runners had a data problem. While they’re getting more and more data about their runs, they lacked a consistent baseline to understand all that data.Over and over again runners, coaches and experts told us that there had to be a better way, but they hadn’t seen it.

So, we went in search of a better metric, and we found cyclists who told us power had changed how they train and race.Calculating power for the human body was hard enough. Doing it on a small, durable device runners would actually use was harder. So, we began working with a select group of advisors from the running and triathlon community.

We built devices, tested them, re-built them and re-tested them.A lot of things had to be pushed to the limit: dense sensor integration, signal processing algorithms, heroic battery power management techniques, and sophisticated signal processing algorithms capable of running a computer smaller than your thumbnail. A half dozen prototypes later, we had it.  Tiny, unobtrusive power for runners. Stryd was built with the help of this passionate running community.

Now, we’re ready to expand our reach and work with 1,000 more runners who will help shape the future of power-based running. To be one of those people, just support us here on Kickstarter.”

Earlier this week Stryd launched over on the Kickstarter crowd funding website and has already received over$120,000 in pledges from over 680 backers.

To make sure you are one of the first to be able to use the Stryd to improve your running jump over to the Kickstarter crowdfunding website to make a pledge from $129.

Apple Takes Top Smartphone Spot From Samsung In Q4

Apple’s new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus have been incredibly popular for the company and now according to a recent report, Apple sold more smartphones in quarter four of 2014 than Samsung.

The last time Apple was number one on global smartphone shipments was back in 2011, the news comes in a report from Gartner.

“Samsung’s performance in the smartphone market deteriorated further in the fourth quarter of 2014, when it lost nearly 10 percentage points in market share,” said Anshul Gupta, principal research analyst at Gartner. “Samsung continues to struggle to control its falling smartphone share, which was at its highest in the third quarter of 2013. This downward trend shows that Samsung’s share of profitable premium smartphone users has come under significant pressure.”

According to the data release by Gartner, Apple shipped a total of 74.8 million smartphones in quarter four of 2014 giving the company a 20.4 percent share of the global smartphone market. In comparison Samsung shipped 73 million smartphones in the quarter with a 19.9 percent share.

If we compare this to the same quarter in 2013, Samsung has a 29.5 percent share with 83 million handsets shipped and Apple had a 17.8 percent share with 50 million handsets shipped.

Sales of the Samsung Galaxy S5 had been lowered than Samsung had expected, the company just launched their new Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge smartphones and it will be interesting to see if these devices help the company increase their sales and also their share of the global smartphone market.

Xiaomi To Start Selling Accessories in Europe

Not too long ago, Xiaomi announced about its plans to start selling accessories online through Mi.com store inthe US.

In a recent move, the company announced they are going to expand its online store to Europe as well. Unfortunately, there won’t be any smartphones, and the sale will only be limited to accessories such as the power banks, head phones, etc.

“It’s going to be a different Mi.com experience from what we have in our markets in Asia, because we’re not selling phones,” Hugo Barra, Xiaomi’s global vice president, said Tuesday at Mobile World Congress. “We’re only going to sell a small number of our hero accessories, things like the Mi Band, studio-grade headphones, in-ear headphones and the world’s most popular power banks,” he said.

The company don’t have any plans to sell handsets in Europe or the US at the moment. India is the market Xiaomi is focusing on at the moment. The company recently launched its high-end Mi4 smartphone in India, which has received its fair share of success in the region. “We would love to be in the US, but that’s nowhere near the top of our priority for now,” said Barra.

There’s no word about the European countries where the company will sell its accessories, but we’ll update youas soon as it announces anything.
